Feature: Senses
The man from Scotland who has been causing a storm in London at the Tecnicality nights run by Inperspective as well as Manga in Edinburgh - Following on from other DJ-Producers we have featured on Urban-Futures we grab some of his time to ask a few questions about what's the story behind the man.
What got you into music?
I grew up listening to all sorts but music was always around me, I can't do anything without music I have to listen to some every day - no matter what style. To me music is the ultimate form of expression, the ultimate motivator and the only true universal language.
How long have you been making music?
Two years now, it's a huge learning curve but I love every minute of it.
What tips can you give people of how and where to start out?
Ideally start as young as possible and with a simple set up. learn whatever hardware or software you can get your hands on inside out, acid or whatever and build from there. make sure you get the most out of whatever set up you get before you buy anything new and never be afraid to experiment.
How would you describe your style of music?
My style - some people call it experimental drum and bass, to me it's atmospheric - it evokes emotion whether it be joy, fear, elation even hate whatever. Chris (Inperspective) calls it 47th century style. I am old fashioned, I still call it jungle, it used to all be jungle back in the day and that name stuck with me I guess, I hate the tag "intelligent" cos that is like trying to attach an intelligence to the music that cannot exist, music is raw emotion and the intelligence if there is any is injected by the listener. just like beauty is in the eye of the beholder I guess!
When you start a tune - how do you start it - what triggers a tune off in your head?
For dnb - beats, I always work of the break first. I love break beats and that is what gives me the initial urge to move or react, so that always comes first. then films often give me ideas. for downbeat I get inspired by pads, it is a true paradox but that side of my musicality loves layers of sound that aren't restricted or defined by and time signature, the rhythm is in the melody.
What makes a good tune?
Like I said before something that evokes emotion. I cannot define what makes a good tune, sometimes it is the most bizarre unorthodox piece other times it can be something simple and direct. everyone hears music differently and I do not suppose to be the authority on what's good and what's not, I know only what I like!
What do you enjoy most, DJing or producing?
I have dj'ed for 12 years now and it never gets boring for me, it is an amazing feeling to be in control of a club full of people, but I must admit that djing has become 1 million times better ever since I started to play some of my own tunes!

I have always had very strict ideas about what I want my set to sound like when I dj and being a producer gives me more control, cos if I don't have what I want to play I can make it.

The two go hand in hand for me though, being a dj makes me a better producer ad being a producer makes me a better dj!

How does it feel to hear you own tune played out in a club?
Amazing, I still get nervous before I play something new though, but when you see people react - there's no feeling like it.. the first tune of mine I ever played out was the first thing I ever finished a tune called "the touch" and I played it in front of a full house at a progression sessions in Edinburgh, to my great relief the place went nuts and loads of people came up to me and asked "who is that" and I must admit it made me extremely happy to say "me".
What projects are you currently working on?
Well I am working on releases for Inperspective, Gamma Ray and a few others that I don't want to say too much about at the moment, I have also done a couple of downbeat things that have attracted some attention so you never know..
What other artists are you working with currently?
I have always worked alone, but I am due to go into the studio with the godfather of science - the mighty Equinox,
What has been the highlight for you so far?
Difficult to say, I have dj'ed in front of thousands of people at big raves over the years and my production career is just kicking off. I guess some of the highlights are getting recognition from my peers like EQUINOX, PARADOX and BREAKAGE, that really does mean a lot to me, there is a lot to come though and I don't like to look back too much!
What dj gigs to you have?
I have a residency at the now infamous technicality, and also at Manga in Edinburgh, a world renowned club which I also attracts a lot of attention. apart from that here there and everywhere!
How do you get your music out there?
You just have to bite the bullet an send it off. playing at manga helps cos you meet a whole load of "big name djs", but I enjoy the support of my fellow technicality residents and am really just letting word of mouth do the rest - for the time being!
How did you get discovered and releases out on labels?
Production - I sent a cd of the touch to Chris Inperspective on the advice of Luke Murcutt (technological groove) and spoke to Chris the day after when he got it and that was that - he introduce me to Equinox and the ball started rolling from there.

Djing - I started when I was 16 at a local club that I was too young to get in as a punter hehe. got spotted by a promoter and started playing at an all nighter in Scotland called awesome 101, it took off from there. me, kmc and dj pace opened a record shop in Edinburgh called drastik plastik and through that got booked for things like fantazia etc
What's the future for Senses?
Music music music, we have a Inperspective tour starting in December which should take us to a town near everyone hopefully and I will continue to spread the word through technicality, manga etc alongside the other beat jedis and try and force some originality back into the music.
