Cedar
Feature: Cedar
Cedar is a well known name amoungst many different styles of music, we managed to track him down whilst playing at Technicality, we wanted to see just what he had been up to and what was in store for him and is label connections in the future.
What got you into music?
I've been into sounds for as long as I can remember. As a kid I had lessons on Flute, Trumpet and Drums although Flute was the only one I took to a decent level.
How long have you been making music?
I've been writing tunes since I was a child, on whatever instument I could get my hands on (we had some kind of home keyboard thing at home). I guess I started making proper tracks when I got access to a friends multi-track reel to reel. We had a couple of synths and layered stuff up, bouncing down the tracks endlessly. As we didn't have a sequencer, we had to play all the beats live, so the timing was a bit suspect. Spending all my money on gear I eventually got a sequencer and started writing ambient house not haveing the right stuff to do anything else. I got a sampler in 1995, and my first release was 'Equinox' on GLR in 1997.
What tips can you give people of how and where to start out?
The cheapest way woud be to get a PC and ram it full of shareware form the internet. You don't need a load of synths etc... to get going, just some ideas. Start out writing (and keep on writing) tunes that inspire you and try to develop your own sound. Listen to what people say about your tracks (not just your mates who think what you are doing is cool!). They may be saying something useful, even if they don't get where you are coming from.
What's style of music do you make?
Dunno really. I started doing drum 'n' bass as soon as I got the sampler, and then moved into doing some downtempo stuff with Cookin'. I'm now workin on a bit of house and broken beat too. I like listening to and playing out a lot of different styles, there is no monoply on good sounds.
What's style of music are you focussing on at the moment?
D'n'B/Downbeat (kind of related) and House/Broken Beat (Kind of related too). See above.
What projects are you currently working on?
I'm spending most of my time working on material for my album on Good Looking at the moment. I have signed more or less 30 tracks to various labels and thought is was time I worked on something that will come out as a package without all of it needing to have club production values. Aside from that I've just finished a couple of D'n'B remixes. One for Purified Audio and another for Fokuz which should be out some time this year. Remixes are great fun, cherry picking all the best samples out of a track!
What other artists are you working with currently?
I've been working with Chris Dawkins (superb guitarist who worked on on the soundtrack to Oceans 11) on a few of his projects, engineering and producing. Aside form that, i've obiously been working with the guy's I've been remixing.
What labels have you had releases on?
Good Looking, Looking Good, Cookin', Expressions, Tropospheric, Ultrawave and forthcoming on Purified Audio, Fokuz & Nu Directions and probably a few more...
What has been the highlight for you so far?
Equinox on GLR031. That was a buzz! I'd had a few tunes out on CD compilations before, but that first piece of vinyl is special!

Are you playing out anywhere at the moment?
At the moment I have a monthly residency at AKA with a new cookin' night starting up in May. Featuring live sets as well as DJ's it looks like this is going to be something special. I'm also playing the Deep Rooted room at The End on some of the Progressions Sessions nights and Technicality @ Herbal in the alternative room on a fairly regular basis. Technicality and Progressions Sessions are both great nights where people really come to hear the music. I have a few international gigs in the pipeline too, in Hungary & Russia first up. You can keep up to date with what's going on by checking my website at www.cedar.ukf.net
How best do you get your music and your sound out to people?
I play it out obviously, and guest on a few radio shows. I guess the record labels do most of the work in putting it out there for people to get hold of.
How did you get discovered and releases out on labels?
To put it simply - I send my music out to people. I know so many excellent producers who are writing tunes and putting them on the shelf, hoping they will get 'discovered' by magic - they won't.

I sent some tracks to future music years ago and one of them got selected for the cover CD. That gave me the the confidence to work really hard and send out tapes and Dan (Bukem) called me soon after to sign up Equinox for Good Looking Records.
We understand you part own covert ops - What's the story there?
heh, heh... I have known James Clem (ASC) for quite a while now, and ever since I met him he had been going on about starting a label.

He has so much enthusiasm for the scene it's impossible not to get caught up in it! James has a great ear, and the confidence to A&R a label, so it was very easy for me to hook up with him over the project. I don't think that you can have too much music out there, i've known people stop spinning atmos. d'n'b because they couldn't get enough tunes to keep a residency varied enough, that shouldn't happen, so I put my money where my mouth is!
What's the future for cedar?
Varied and busy. Obviously the album is a big thing for me at the moment. I'm also picking up on the DJing as I've been very slack with promoting the sounds until lately, it's easy to forget what tripe a lot of people listen to because no-one ever turns up and says 'listen to this'. I'd really like to get a live set together over the next year and hopefully I will be offered a few more remixes (I'd love to do some downbeat or house mixes!)
Cedar has provided us with an exclusive mixe for Urban-Futures. We hope you enjoy them.
