Feature: Covert Operations |
We caught up with the mighty ASC to check out what he's been up to and find out what's the future hold's for him and his new label Covert Operations. |
What does the future hold for drum & bass and what do you feel you as a label contribute? |
It's hard to say what the future could bring within any form of music really, who could have predicted 5 years back that the main thing for most people these days is the Brazilian flava that's doing the rounds? We will continue to push our sound to our greatest extent and keep offering a different take on how atmospheric/progressive music is perceived. There a lot more people these days doing there thing for the music aswell which is excellent and can only help this music reach out further than it has ever done before. |

We hear that you took Covert Operations on a small tour in Australia recently, Can you tell us a little more about it? |
Yeah, myself, Blame & Chris from Inperspective Records took the voyage down under to DJ in Australia for 2 weeks. Whilst we were out there we had a great time, met a lot of good people, played to some good crowds and generally enjoyed every minute of it. Just gotta big Sasha up while we are on the subject and say a big "How about, no?" to him. I also have a few more tours in the pipeline, nothing thats completely 100% as of yet, but as soon as they are it'll be updated and put on the Covert website. |
Along side running the label what other projects are you personally involved in? |
Basically recording drum & bass & DJ'ing. I have released on a mulitude of labels so far and theres more to come on the same labels and some other new labels that are set to surface, plus the more established labels aswell. |
What's the story behind Covert Op's, how did it all start? |
Covert Operations was a project started merely within a group of me & my friends, all just doing something within drum & bass. So it was rather a collective before a label, many of the original crew that were dj's and producers didn't follow it through or left due to work commitments and such, and as it stands now there are 2 of use involved in the label side of things - myself and Tom Hill (Dimensions). Cedar is also part of the crew, but has taken time out recently as his wife gave birth not so long ago to their first child and he is also writing a LP for Good Looking, so needless to say, he is a busy man at the moment! |

What artists are currently work with covert ops? |
Out artist roster is growing in stature all the time, at the present time our artists include: ASC, Cedar, Chris J, Dimensions, Equinox, J-Laze, Kom'ah, Mykra, Ochre, Orion, Pariah, Probe-One, P.B.K. & Senses. |
Do you have any new artists in the pipeline? |
Our newest artists are London based Probe-One, we have the honour of releasing their first 12" of many. They were talent we had been watching for quite some time, just waiting and coaching them into developing their sound, and after about 2 1/2 yrs they came up with some very impressive material so we thought it was time to nurture them into the camp. |

What direction do you see the label's music and style heading towards? |
We will continue to push out more soulful sounds through the CD market, with our first CD compilation preparing itself nicely at the moment, and also our futuristic dancefloor approach via the 12" market. |
What's the reaction been to your first release from the label? |
We had an excellent reaction with the distributor asking for a repress of the first run, but for us it wasnt really about getting the sales straight away, it was about getting as much music as we can out straight away - which is why we decided to move straight to our 2nd 12". |
How long till the next release and whats it all about? |
As I'm typing this now, the 2nd 12" is in production, the mastering has been complete and we were very happy with that and the Test Presses will be back soon. So it shouldnt be too long until the final release version is out to buy, again through our excellent distributors - Nu Urban Music. The tracks are by J-Laze and is called Azure and the flip is by Chris J called Elevations. |
What's been the highlight for the label so far? |
It's hard to say really, but everything has been really good, there has been a lot of low points and hard work before the first 12" came out, but thats thoroughly behind us now. It's all about the future and we are definitely gonna be there all the way, supporting the scene with our music. |
